Field Dispatch · Correspondence, Civilian, Trivial

Send word from the front, even when the front is a Tuesday stand‑up

SlowBurns rewrites your plainest messages as Civil War field dispatches and reads them aloud as though the Republic hung in the balance. It does not. You are ten minutes late.

From the Encampment · this 16th day of September

My dear friend, the word has come down the line, and it is a hard word: we are out of milk again. The stores are spent, and the evening is the poorer for it.

— J.

How it works

Three steps. None of them necessary.

01 · You

Paste something boring.

Paste it exactly as you would have sent it: running late, out next week, the ticket is blocked. Do not dress it up on our account. Dressing it up is the whole of our job.

we’re out of milk again, can you grab some on the way backDELIVERED · 5:41 PM
Plate I · Text message. Artist unknown.
02 · Us

We take it far too seriously.

Every fact survives the transcription: the milk, the errand, the ask. Only the tone is conscripted. A blocked ticket remains a blocked ticket, it has simply learned to mourn.

The word has come down
the line, and it is a hard
word: we are out of milk…

Plate II · The same message, promoted.
03 · Posterity

Someone with a very sad voice reads it aloud.

A weathered voice reads it over a mournful fiddle while the camera creeps across candlelit parchment. What comes back is a documentary about a carton of milk.

Plate III · The reading, c. 1863. Appt. at 2:15.

Your turn.

One sentence in, one documentary out. Four minutes of it. Here is one we made earlier.

The Quartermaster's Desk

Your commission.

Enlist to keep your dispatches, and to sit for a portrait that makes you look like you have seen things.
